They had quite a devoted following on newsgroups and web forums. I haven't played the Privateer games, though I remember when they were new I understand their engines were borrowed from the Wing Commander series. It had some 3D acceleration support, continued the FMV footage of characters played by actors Mark Hamill, Ginger Lynn Allen, Tom Wilson, and others, and had some interesting industrial/techno/metal music for its soundtrack, but I doubt it would run on my computer without some extensive time set aside to configuring and hacking it. Wing Commander Prophecy ran just fine on my Windows 98 system, at least. I could never get Wing Commander IV to work in Windows 95 or 98, so that was a boot-up-in-DOS-mode one for me. It was indeed souped up with DirectX support for Windows-Windows 95, that is. I got the Wing Commander Trilogy back when it was new in 1997.
